Since 1983, April has been designated as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. All across the nation, family resource centers and other agencies are promoting programs and events to increase awareness of child abuse in the hopes of protecting children. Here at TOP, we provide parenting education and home visitation programs for families with young children. These include Parents As Teachers, Parent to Parent, No Place Like Home, and Together We Can. These programs empower families with skills and knowledge to promote healthy development.
In 1989, a grandmother in Virginia tied a blue ribbon to her car's antenna as a tribute to her 3-year-old grandson, whose life was cut short by child abuse. Her tribute caught on, and the tradition of the blue ribbon continues today. We are tying blue ribbons to recognize the part that we all play in promoting the social and emotional well-being of children and families in our community. We also have a Pinwheel Garden and blue ribbons at Snow Hinton Park showing support for all children throughout the community. You can help too! Wear BLUE every Friday to show your support for the effort to prevent abuse and raise awareness throughout the community.
